Over the past six years, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been helping the Yemeni island of Socotra, delivering $110 million in humanitarian aid. This substantial financial contribution, funded by various UAE organizations, has not only revitalized critical public services but has also significantly improved the quality of life for Socotra’s residents.

The UAE’s commitment to Socotra’s health sector has been firm. Emirates Red Crescent, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, and other organizations have provided medical equipment, and ambulances, and established a fully equipped emergency center with two surgery rooms, all meeting international standards. In addition, the aid has expanded Sheikh Khalifa Hospital, boosting the number of beds to 42, with four dedicated to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Notably, the UAE’s relief mission also included a donation of 60,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses in June, demonstrating its dedication to tackling the ongoing pandemic.

The UAE’s impact on Socotra’s education system has been a priority as well. Scholarships have been offered to 80 students, giving them the opportunity of a lifetime to continue their education in Egypt, while 40 students received scholarships to UAE University. The UAE has implemented various educational projects, including the restoration of schools, the creation of new classes, and the establishment of the Socotra Institute for Consultancy and Training.

It is clear that the Emirates has gone above and beyond by recruiting teachers internationally and hiring 440 local teachers. Additionally, the initiative has printed 227,000 textbooks, founded the Socotra International University, and opened two colleges, ensuring that the education sector is equipped for success.

Critical infrastructure projects have played a major role in Socotra’s transformation. The UAE’s investment has restored Socotra’s airport, funded the construction of two solar power stations, established four power plants, and installed power generators in remote villages. These initiatives not only address immediate needs but also contribute to the long-term sustainability and development of the island.

The UAE’s humanitarian efforts in Socotra over the past six years have been nothing short of transformative. From revitalizing healthcare and education to investing in essential infrastructure, the UAE’s commitment has significantly improved the lives of Socotra’s residents. As the journey continues, this partnership shows the positive impact that international collaboration can have on communities facing adversity.
