Green Revolution in Sharjah

Sharjah’s Mleiha desert has seen a remarkable transformation with the blooming of a massive wheat farm over 400 hectares of land. The farm produced over 200 tonnes of high-quality yield in March 2023, and the Sharjah Ruler has issued directives to speed up its expansion to 1,900 hectares.

The project, known as Saba Sanabel, which means seven spikes, has the highest protein content of 18% in the UAE market. It is defying predictions that wheat could not be cultivated in the desert, and it is a game-changer for local agriculture.

The wheat farm is a part of Sharjah’s efforts to promote sustainable agriculture in the region. The original plan was to double the farm size by 2024 as part of phase 2 of the project and make it a 1,900-hectare green oasis by 2025 (phase 3). However, the Sharjah Ruler directed the authorities concerned to merge the second phase of the project with the first one.

Preparations for expanding the cultivation area by five times are already underway, and seeds are expected to be sown in November this year. The farm's smooth processing and distribution will be ensured by a contract signed with Al Ain Mills for milling the wheat. The Sharjah Cooperative Society has also been granted the contract to sell and market the wheat, becoming the official distributor of the locally-grown produce.

The Saba Sanabel project is an excellent example of sustainable farming practices and the potential to transform arid lands into green oases. It is a vital step towards achieving food security in the UAE, and it demonstrates the country's commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture.
