By intervening in atmospheric processes to induce precipitation, the UAE is effectively mitigating drought, enhancing water resources, and ensuring its long-term sustainability. For nearly two decades, the UAE has pioneered cloud seeding operations, demonstrating its commitment to combatting water scarcity.

Mitigating Global Warming and Water Scarcity

The significance of rain enhancement goes beyond mere water replenishment. It also plays a crucial role in limiting the impacts of global warming, such as droughts and high water evaporation rates. Cloud seeding techniques enhance micro-physical processes within clouds, leading to increased precipitation by a global average of 18 percent. This proactive approach is essential in mitigating the future effects of climate change and safeguarding water resources for generations to come.

UAE’s Cloud Seeding Initiatives

The UAE’s journey in cloud seeding began in 2002 through the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). Initially targeting summertime convection along the northeastern Hajar mountains, operations expanded gradually, covering the entire UAE by 2010. The NCM, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and specialized expertise, leads cloud seeding operations across the country.

The UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP)

Established in 2015, UAEREP underpins the UAE’s commitment to scientific advancement in rain enhancement technology. Managed by the NCM, the program supports innovative research projects with grants of up to US$1.5 million over three years. Through its global outreach efforts, UAEREP has fostered collaboration with researchers worldwide, facilitating knowledge exchange and technological innovation in rain enhancement.

Achievements and Future Prospects

UAEREP has funded nine innovative research projects over its three cycles, leading to groundbreaking advancements in rain enhancement technology. From nanomaterials to UAVs and cloud simulation rooms, these projects have pushed the boundaries of scientific innovation. With ongoing cycles and global recognition, UAEREP continues to drive research collaboration and knowledge transfer, ensuring sustainable water resources for countries facing water scarcity.
