Abu Dhabi’s Mangrove Success: A Climate Change Milestone
The Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD) has marked a significant environmental triumph, announcing the successful planting of 44 million mangrove trees within the emirate since 2020. This ambitious endeavor forms a vital part of the UAE’s proactive stance against climate change.
In collaboration with the Department of Municipalities and Transport and ADNOC, EAD achieved a remarkable feat by planting 23 million mangrove trees over the last two years. Spanning an impressive 9,200 hectares, this effort is part of the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative (ADMI), contributing to the overarching goal of planting 100 million mangrove trees by 2030. This initiative is integral to the UAE’s broader ambition of attaining climate neutrality by 2050.
Driving Climate Change Strategy
Aligned with the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy, the initiative seeks to amplify the preservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems. By bolstering these ecosystems, it aims to fortify their pivotal role in mitigating climate change’s impact. These mangrove trees are projected to annually sequester approximately 233,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to the energy consumption of over 25,000 homes.
Expressing his elation at this achievement, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan emphasized the enduring commitment of Abu Dhabi to sustain and propagate mangrove trees. This dedication stems from honoring the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed, resonating with the UAE’s ongoing Year of Sustainability.
Mangroves: Nature’s Guardians
Mangroves are renowned as highly productive coastal ecosystems, playing a multifaceted role by offering diverse environmental and economic benefits. Beyond their pivotal role in climate change adaptation and carbon capture from the atmosphere, these ecosystems provide crucial support to numerous marine organisms, including those facing extinction.
Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology & UAE Special Envoy for Climate, Group MD & CEO of Adnoc, lauded this milestone as a testament to the commitment toward environmental preservation. Emphasizing the utilization of nature-based solutions, he highlighted Adnoc’s decade-long partnership with EAD in nurturing mangrove growth.
UAE’s Stance in Global Climate Action
Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, underscored the UAE’s expanded efforts in mangrove planting as a key nature-based solution to counter climate change. Recognizing mangroves as natural carbon sinks capable of substantial carbon capture, she reiterated Abu Dhabi’s success in planting 23 million mangrove trees as a significant stride toward the broader goal of 100 million trees by 2030. This proactive approach aligns with the UAE NetZero Strategy 2050, affirming the nation’s commitment as a pivotal partner in driving global climate action.
Abu Dhabi’s dedication to mangrove preservation and expansion stands as a testament to the UAE’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability. This remarkable initiative not only embodies the nation’s vision for a greener future but also underscores its role as a proactive global climate steward.
